Description

This expressive, fun wide-eyed kokeshi was created by Saitō Tokujū (1926–2021), a respected craftsman of the Nakanosawa tradition in the Tōhoku region of Japan.

Tokujū was born in the Aizu area of Fukushima. After a brief period working in the wartime defense industry, he returned home and studied design, later apprenticing under Tsuchiyu masters including Yoshizō Iwamoto. His work carries both graphic clarity and warmth — simple lines that feel alive.

This particular doll was found in an antique shop in East London, far from where it was first made. After travelling across continents, it has finally returned to Japan with me, now resting in Tokyo. Ah, a joyful homecoming story etched into the wood.
One can’t help but wonder where it will travel next..!

There is gentle discoloration and surface wear consistent with age.
These marks do not diminish its charm but rather deepen the character of the piece. Signed on the base.
